GIMP

GIMP calls itself a GNU image manipulation program so what does that mean ?

GNU is an operating system that only uses completely (_for) free software.

So the software helps you edit or create images for free. The counterpart to Photoshop (399€) or Corel Paint Shop Pro (69€).
